His 51 years in the House of Commons were a record for any Labour MP. But on this 30th anniversary of the miners’ strike, it will be his support in 1984-5 for which he will be best remembered in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.
Tony Benn was one of the great political diarists of modern history. His nine volumes of dairies, stretching from 1940 to 2011, give a fascinating insight into the workings of government, Parliament and the Labour Party, and of his love for the people and communities of Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.
He will be missed by Derbyshire, the whole country and most of all his children and grand-children. My condolences and thoughts are with them.
