Holywell Medical Group Updates Patients on Development Plans
Around 40 patients with Holywell Medical Group (HMG) in the Staveley and Chesterfield areas attended a meeting on Thursday (August 14) to hear more about the development plans underway to improve access to the practice’s health services.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Greg Place, chair of the Nottinghamshire Local Medical Committee (LMC), and attended by staff from HMG, the group’s Patient Participation Group, Derbyshire LMC and NHS England.
Holywell Medical Group Project Manager Pat Colclough acknowledged that getting through on the telephone had been cited as the biggest issue by patients at the group’s surgeries at Rectory Road, Inkersall, Barrow Hill, Grange Family Health Centre and Holywell House.
She confirmed that a new telephone system was due to be in place by November and invited patients to feed back their views on how they wanted to contact the practice by telephone and online through the website http://www.holywellmedicalgroup.co.uk .
Mrs Colclough also announced the launch of a month-long audit to help the group better understand how many appointments patients wanted at each of its surgeries and what specific services they required. This will help determine health professionals’ availability at different locations to improve patient access to services.
Patients also heard about efforts being made to recruit more GPs and nurses into the local surgeries – including plans to establish HMG as a nurse training practice.
Dr John Grenville, secretary of the Derbyshire LMC, highlighted the growing shortage of GPs nationwide and confirmed that issue had been centralto the problems facing HMG.
“Only 62% of GP training places are currently being filled in the East Midlands, which shows that we are not attracting new people into the profession, and a growing number of GPs currently working are approaching retirement age.
“There is a similar issue with Practice Nurses and it is an issue that must be addressed both locally and nationally.”
In a statement issued after the meeting, NHS England Medical Director (Derbyshire) Doug Black, said: “NHS England is committed to ensuring that all the primary care services it commissions from independent GP practices in Derbyshire are safe, clinically effective and of a high quality.
“We will continue to work closely with Holywell Medical Group’s partners, GPs and staff to ensure that the comprehensive plan put in place to deliver improvements to services is delivered.”
Holywell Medical Group Senior Partner Dr Nadine Kale concluded: “We appreciate that some patients have faced difficulties in getting an appointment at the surgery of their choice and with the GP or Practice Nurse that they have requested.
“We are doing all that we can to address these issues and are confident that patients will see improvements in the short and medium term.
“We are committed to working with patients to involve them in our development plans and I hope that the meeting we convened to update them on this work will also encourage more people to become involved or to contact the Patient Participation Group with their ideas and concerns.
“The meeting was a good opportunity to share our thoughts and ideas with patients and we hope to have further opportunities to do so in the future.”
Holywell Medical Group is inviting patients to a meeting to update them on its development plan to improve accessibility to services at its Rectory Road surgery in Staveley and across the Holywell Medical Group.
The meeting will be held on Thursday August 14 from 7.30pm to 9pm at Netherthorpe School, Ralph Road, Staveley, (S43 3PU).
An outline of improvements already made and development plans for the future will be presented at the meeting with an opportunity for patients to ask questions of the panel which will include GPs at the practice, representatives of the Patient Participation Group and NHS England.

NHS England have written to patients registered with the Holywell Medical Group regarding the primary care services provided by the practice. This is an issue I have been working on for some time and if you have any questions or issues you would like to get in touch with me about regarding these development please do so.
The Letter to Patients:
Deputy Head of Commissioning Jonathan Rycroft states:
“As you may be aware, since last autumn, NHS England (Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire) and other NHS organisations have been working with Holywell Medical Group to address issues that have affected the services you receive.
“An independent review by Collingham Healthcare Education Centre (CHEC) and led by Professor Mike Pringle, a highly-respected figure in GP services, had recommended that a way of improving services and increasing GP capacity was to split Rectory Road surgery in Staveley off from Holywell Medical Group to be a new independent practice.
“We gave a public commitment to confirm if this was possible by the end of June. Since the CHEC report was published in February 2014, we have explored every avenue with Holywell Medical Group and others to find a new provider to operate from the Rectory Road site.
“I am now writing to let you know that it has not been possible to reach agreement with any other provider qualified to deliver GP services to take on Rectory Road. The surgery will therefore remain part of Holywell Medical Group. A particular issue for the prospective new provider has been the difficulty in recruiting GPs to work in the area and this is a problem throughout the UK.”
The improvement plan already in place to improve access to high-quality services at the practice’s other four sites will now be extended to include Rectory Road. NHS England will continue to work with Holywell Medical Group and its NHS partners to build on the progress already made, which was acknowledged by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its recent report, and continue to support the practice in its efforts to recruit more GPs.
Dr Nadine Kale, Senior Partner at Holywell Medical Group said today: “The GP partners at Holywell Medical Group remain committed to providing patient choice in the Staveley area.
“We particularly welcome the support pledged by NHS England (Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire) to facilitate the recruitment of further GPs to alleviate the pressure on our existing healthcare team.
“Now that we have clarity in the Rectory Road surgery situation, we can accelerate our robust action plan across all our surgeries which will see a range of key service improvements for our patients.
“We are arranging an open meeting in Staveley in mid-August (date and venue to be confirmed) to which all our patients are invited to hear about our plans to deliver these key improvements such as a new telephone system, longer appointment times and extended hours. “
Details of the meeting will be confirmed in the very near future by the practice, through its own patient communications and the local media. Tony Parkes, a member of the practice’s Patient Participation Group (PPG) said that a recent PPG questionnaire of patients, including those at the Rectory Road surgery, had highlighted improvements in the appointment booking process and better use of online booking, and that the majority of patients reported they were happy with the health care that they had received.
Since the Holywell Medical Group took over the surgery on Rectory Road a range of problems have emerged. I am working closely with Toby Perkins, Labour MP for Chesterfield, to get the situation sorted out as quickly as possible. We will continue to press NHS England and the local Care Commissioning Group to do this. Both agencies were present last night so that people could address their concerns to the them directly.The latest position is summarised in this statement from NHS England:
