Natascha nominates local shop for Parliamentary award

Today Natascha Engel MP nominated Bown’s Butchers and Greengrocers in Ashover for the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops group award for ‘Small Shop of the Year’.

Bown’s Butchers and Greengrocers in Ashover, Derbyshire is an excellent example of a small local shop. It’s run by David Bown, his sister Kath Dronfield and villager Sally Montague.

This shop was first opened in the 1960s and David Bown has worked there from the age of 17. The shop came up for sale in 1988 and David was able to buy it and make it his own.

It's a real village emporium as well as being the village gossip/news centre. David and Kath not only provide household items and foodstuffs, greengroceries, flowers and wine etc, they are also butchers and produce their own pies, sausage and dishes like pheasant in wine, stews and lasagne all locally sourced. The game for the pies and stews comes from Sally’s son’s shoot. They also provide the area's top catering service for all the local groups.

More importantly, David and Kath are extremely generous and are a treasured part of their small rural community.

People come from as far as London to shop at Bown’s Butchers and Greengrocers.

Prince Charles visited the shop in December 2006 as part of the Best Kept Village award.

The winner of this award will be announced at a reception in Parliament before the summer recess.

Natascha Engel MP said:

“Bown’s is a real jewel and shows that a personal, high quality service beats mass production every time!”
